Five Tips for Filing Home Insurance Claims: Second Tip

Gerri Willis’ mid-September Five Tips columns revolved around five tips for sorting out your home insurance claim and for anyone who has never gone through this, it’s important for you to understand these tips before you need to - here is the second tip.

Tip #2: Assess wind versus water damage
As you may remember in the first tip, wind-driven water damage is usually covered but simply flooding is not. Here are some indicators of wind-damage:

  1. Torn/missing shingles - may indicate that a strong wind blew off the singles.
  2. Broken windows - If water entered and damaged the house through the broken window, that’s wind-driven.
  3. Broken seals around windows and doors.
  4. Downed trees, especially if they’re downed on your house.
  5. Bent foundation bolts.
