If you’ve been reading some of my recent posts you’ll recognize a common plight of homeowners (and renters) after a disaster, your insurance policy doesn’t cover everything. In fact, after I posted my own homeowner’s policy someone mentioned that perhaps I had a shortfall (I didn’t, a line item increased my coverage by 50% so I was safe) which is something that happens often.
The unfortunate story of Gerri Willis in her column back in July was that a huge tree fell into her yard, narrowly missing her house. She thought that the homeowners policy would cover the situation but soon learned that it covered absolutely nothing. The reason was because there was no structural damage to the house, even though it destroyed some shrubs and messed up the lawn. And, if the tree had hit her house, chances are it wouldn’t have covered everything (and she’d have a huge gaping hole in her house.
