Is Requiring Renters Insurance Illegal

In short, no.

I never really thought of it in this way but when a landlord is requiring you to get renter’s insurance, they’re really passing off more of the cost of protecting the property to you. See, without insurance, if something happens while you’re there that could be attributed to you, the renter, it’s much harder to get the money from you - especially if you don’t have it. Also, if someone breaks in and steals all of your belongings, you might want to buy more clothes before you can send the whole rent check in. If that’s the case, it may be hard to evict you and that just opens up a whole host of headaches for both you and the landlord.

As the SFGate article does mention, renters insurance is usually pretty cheap so this isn’t that big of a deal.
