Safety Tips Beyond Security Systems

It’s one thing to secure your house by way of a monitored security system, it’s another to actually take steps to securing your home such that you don’t become a statistic. There are a lot of simple and inexpensive things you can do to make your home more secure.

1. Lock Your Doors
It sounds stupid but lots of people forget to lock up their doors and windows! Often times a thief is merely an opportunist and not a hardened criminal armed with lockpicking tools and other fancy equipment. Sometimes it might be someone who sees some lights off and just tries the door and sees an opportunity. Don’t forget to lock your doors and your street accessible windows when you leave.

2. Keep Your Valuables Stored Away
Don’t leave money or jewelry or other expensive possessions out in plain view. Even if a thief does get in, simply having your valuables stored in someplace obscure can save the day for you. Thieves don’t like to stay a very long time inside a home so take advantage of that, don’t make it easy for them to steal you stuff.

3. Pretend You’re Home
Putting your lights on timers is a great way to give the impression that you are home and homes that are occupied generally, but not always, are not robbed. Timers are inexpensive and preventing just one intrusion will pay for themselves.

4. Keep Your Neighbors Informed
This is especially important if you leave for an extended period – tell your neighbors your schedule so they can keep an eye out for an suspicious behavior in and around your home. If you’re away for a week, they probably shouldn’t hear footsteps or noise coming from your home, right?

Do you have any good tips?
