Now that we’ve covered how motion sensors work and how door and window sensors work, we might as move along to the bells and whistles of the home security system: the alarm.
Alarms usually have two parts: in-house notifier and an out-house notifier. Those were terms I made up but they’ll make sense in a minute. An in-house notifier is the audible and visual alarms that you’ll hear and see that will indicate an intrusion. A loud siren, flashing lights, or a combination of both are what I call an in-house notifier because it works in or around the house. The out-house notifier is typically a telephone dialer that notifies the security company or the local police station.
The in-house notifier is important because it will usually draw attention to the house, from neighbors or the security company/police when they arrive on scene, and they can convince the burglar to leave the area. The out-house notifier is important because, well, it calls the cavalry. One without the other is significantly weaker than the two working in tandem.
