Types of Safes: Burglar Resistant Safes

So we’ve covered safe basics and fire resistant safes, the next type of safe is a burglar resistant safe designed to prevent unauthorized access. Most people think of these types of safes whenever they talk about safes.

The ratings range in ratings from Class 1 to Class 5 (again, developed and rated by the Underwriters Laboratory) based on the thickness of the door and walls and they correspond to how long the safe will resist particular attacks. On ratings 3 – 5, the safe has a special resistance against particular attacks such as from a drill, cutter, or torch. These ratings are especially important to insurance companies because they use these ratings to determine how much cash they will insure in each class of safe.

Any locked box is considered a Class 1 safe and all fire resistant safes, since they are constructed of metal and have a lock, are at least a class 1 burglar resistant safe.

The protect ranges from 15 minutes to one hour and may have additional resistance designations:

  • DR – Drill Resistant
  • TL – Tool Resistant
  • TR – Torch Resistant
  • TRTL – Tool and torch resistant
  • X6 – For the best bank and jewelers safes

For example, if a safe were rated for DRTL60X6, that would mean it is a drill resistant and tool resistant for 60 minutes plus it’s an X6 rating, meaning it’s one of the best bank and jeweler’s safes.
