If you’re a renter and you haven’t heard about renter’s insurance, you might be wonder what the big deal is. Why is everyone telling you get renter’s insurance? Shouldn’t the owner of the home have homeowners insurance that covers everything in case something bad happens? Why should you have to get another policy, pay another premium, and have to deal with another insurance company if you don’t have to?
Because it’s prudent. Because accidents happen. Because your landlord isn’t responsible for your stuff, just his stuff. And, you’re responsible for his stuff too so if you have a party and wreck his walls, well you’re on the hook (or your insurance). Renter’s insurance is cheap, renter’s insurance protects you against common concerns such as fires and burglaries, and renters insurance can cover your butt against a lawsuit if someone gets hurt on your property (because of that party).
Oh, and renters insurance protects your stuff and you even when the bad event occurs outside of your residence… like say in your car. Get that renters insurance!
